French Vanilla Chocolate Cake


Last night I was at McCafé, sipping Americano coffee with a vanilla chocolate muffin. After paying a hefty price for the same, I decided I’ll make one. I went text book. Here’s the how to part.


  1. 2 cups all purpose flour [maida]
  2. 2 eggs
  3. 1/4 cup sugar
  4. 1/2 cup butter
  5. 1 cup milk
  6. 1/2 cup buttermilk
  7. Chocolate chips
  8. French Vanilla flavour
  9. 1 table spoon cocoa
  10. Baking powder [1 tablespoon]
  11. Salt (1/2 table spoon)
  12. Red food colour [optional]

Step 1 The dry ingredients

Sift flour, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt in one bowl. and mix them.

Step 2 The Wet ingredients.

Break the eggs in a big bowl. This is the bowl where you’ll mix everything later. Now add a quarter to half cup sugar, based on your taste basically. Mix it slowly, kind of whip it actually. Once a uniform mixture is acquired, add butter. Add in small portions and keep mixing. Mix everything well. Add in the milk and the buttermilk. Keep a little milk for later.

Step 3 Mix Everything

Start adding the dry stuff, half a cup at a time. Keep mixing so that no lumps are formed. You should be able to stir smoothly without having to put much efforts. If not, add  some milk and mix again. The mixture should have a nice creamy texture to it. Now add a few squirts of the French vanilla essence and mix.

Step 4 Prepare to bake.

I have actually created a colourful cake by making two mixtures . Split the mixture into two. Add red colour to it (about a table spoon). Now take a baking tray or if you want muffins out of it, muffin tray and grease it. Also sprinkle some flour on it. Keep adding layers of both the mixtures one by one or any random pattern. But sprinkle a generous amount of choco chips after the first layer. This will create a beautiful chocolate layer near toward the bottom. Keep sprinkling them here and there and on the top. Voilà, you are ready to bake.


Step 5 Baking

Preheat your oven to 220 C. Bake the Cake for 25 minutes. you can keep checking for cooked centre by a piercing a toothpick or knife through after 20 minutes.


Step 6 EAT!

Take out the gorgeous cake form the oven. Let it settle for 10 minutes. Now onto a board or plate, keep the tray inverted and give a light tap from behind. The cake should fall in one piece into the place.  Cut and serve!
